Organizations that aim to provide high-quality care must recognize the significant impact of trauma on health. Without that awareness, healthcare systems and medical services can inadvertently be re-traumatizing. Organizations can develop a lens that allows them to identify aspects of their system and services that contribute to this re-traumatization. A trauma informed care approach recognizes the role trauma plays in our individual lives and structures an organization and its services around healthcare delivery in ways that support workers and patients to maximize both their physical and mental health.
Following this presentation, the participant will be able to:
1. Define trauma-informed care
2. List the key components of trauma-informed care
3. Identify situations in care interactions in which this framework can be applied
4. Assess their own relationship with trauma
5. Identify next steps for competency development in their practice
